Mohawk Trail

Massachusetts Scenic Byway · Charlemont, Massachusetts

Route 2 across the top of Massachusetts, following a Native footpath through the Berkshire hills that was designated in 1914 as the first scenic automobile road in New England — a deliberate piece of early motoring tourism, complete with the overlooks and roadside attractions to match. The famous stretch runs about sixty-three miles from the Connecticut River valley to Williamstown, over Whitcomb Summit and down through the Hairpin Turn into North Adams, and in the first fortnight of October it is one of the great foliage drives in America.

Route 2, Orange to Williamstown, Charlemont, Massachusetts, 01339, United States

A public state highway, open year round and free. The scenic heart runs roughly 35 miles from Shelburne Falls to North Adams. Winter brings snow, ice and fog at elevation. Peak foliage in the first fortnight of October is spectacular and traffic is severe — go midweek and start early. The Bridge of Flowers is seasonal, roughly April to October.
