Molde and the Varden Viewpoint

The Town Of Roses And The Molde International Jazz Festival; Varden Looks Across The Fjord To The Romsdal Peaks, Often Put At 222 · Molde, More og Romsdal

Molde is a small fjord town in More og Romsdal, called the Town of Roses for its gardens and best known for a view you can reach from its own back streets. From Varden, a viewpoint at roughly 400 m in the forested hills directly above town, you look south across the wide Romsdalsfjord and its islands to a long wall of sharp peaks, a skyline often put at 222 summits, many still white into June. You can walk up in about an hour on marked forest paths or drive most of the way, and platforms and a restaurant sit at the top (confirm opening). The town below is modern: much of it was rebuilt after German bombing in 1940, when King Haakon VII and the government briefly sheltered here. It comes alive in mid July for Moldejazz, often called one of Europe's oldest jazz festivals, and it makes a practical base between the Atlantic Ocean Road and Trollstigen. The honest caveat: the town itself is plain, the view depends entirely on the weather, and under low cloud there is nothing to see at all.

Varden is open all year, day and night, and free: the paths and platforms have no gate or ticket. The restaurant at the top keeps its own hours, often longer in summer and limited or closed on some winter days - confirm. Walk up from the town centre in about an hour, or drive the road towards Varden and park near the top (paid or limited spaces - confirm). Molde is reached by air to Aro airport, by bus from the Rauma Line train at Andalsnes, by Hurtigruten, or by the Vestnes ferry. Book Moldejazz tickets and July rooms ahead.
