Molokini

Marine Life Conservation District · Maui County, Hawaii

A crescent-shaped, partially submerged volcanic crater forming a small uninhabited islet in the ʻAlalākeiki Channel between Maui and Kahoʻolawe. It is the remains of one of the seven Pleistocene volcanoes that formed the prehistoric island of Maui Nui. The sunken half of the crater shelters exceptionally clear water and a reef inside its arc, and it is one of the best-known snorkelling and diving sites in Hawaii - reached only by boat, and never landed on.

⚠ THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS TURNING UP. Molokini is an uninhabited islet in open water and it can only be reached by commercial boat from Maui - there is no public landing, no facilities of any kind, and the crater is closed to going ashore. Trips run in the morning, roughly from dawn to early afternoon, because the wind and chop build after that. ⚠ TRIPS ARE CANCELLED OUTRIGHT IN POOR CONDITIONS and that is a frequent occurrence.
