Monadnock Building
Modern Architecture · Chicago, Illinois
One building containing the end of one era and the start of another. The northern half, by Burnham and Root in 1891, is the tallest load-bearing masonry office building ever constructed — its brick walls are six feet thick at the base to hold up sixteen storeys. The southern half, finished two years later by Holabird and Roche, does the same job on a steel frame with walls a few inches thick.
53 West Jackson Boulevard, Chicago, Illinois, 60604, United States
A working office building. Ground-floor corridor and shops generally open on weekdays during business hours. Exterior at any time.
