Monahans Sandhills State Park
Subnational Park · Monahans, Texas
Three thousand eight hundred acres of living sand dunes rising straight off Interstate 20 in the Permian Basin — an active dune field that shifts and reshapes with the wind, so it looks different from one visit to the next. Visitors hire plastic discs at headquarters and slide down it. Underneath grows a forest of Havard shin oak standing three feet tall with roots reaching ninety feet down, which is stranger than the sand.
