Monhegan Island
Island · Monhegan, Maine
A small island twelve nautical miles off the Maine coast, inhabited for over four hundred years, and one of the oldest and most influential artist colonies in America - Rockwell Kent, Edward Hopper and the Wyeths all worked here. There are no paved roads and almost no cars, seventeen miles of trail across a square mile of island, and cliffs on the seaward side that drop straight into the Atlantic.

⚠ THE ISLAND IS REACHED ONLY BY FERRY and the boat governs everything. Crossings run from Port Clyde, Boothbay Harbor and New Harbor, roughly an hour each way, on a limited timetable that thins sharply outside summer. ⚠ THERE ARE ALMOST NO CARS, no paved roads to speak of, and very limited electricity in places. Most businesses run roughly late May to mid-October; in winter the year-round population is about sixty-four.
