Monmouth Battlefield State Park

National Historic Landmark · Manalapan, New Jersey

Twenty-eight hundred acres of preserved farmland, hedgerow and orchard where the Continental Army fought the British to a standstill on 28 June 1778 — THE LONGEST CONTINUOUS BATTLE OF THE REVOLUTION AND THE LARGEST ARTILLERY DUEL OF THE ENTIRE WAR, fought in temperatures near a hundred degrees that killed men on both sides without a shot being fired. Washington rode into a retreat ordered by Charles Lee, reversed it in front of the army, and by evening held the field. IT IS ALSO WHERE THE MOLLY PITCHER STORY COMES FROM. The landscape is remarkably intact, which is the reason the park is worth walking rather than reading about.

20 Route 33 Business, Manalapan, New Jersey, 07726, United States

FREE, with free parking and a FREE visitor centre — a New Jersey state park with no admission and no booking for individuals. The grounds and trails are open dawn to dusk year round. THE VISITOR CENTRE KEEPS DAYTIME HOURS AND CLOSES ON SOME DAYS, particularly out of season, so check before travelling if the film and battle map are part of the plan. THE CRAIG HOUSE opens on limited days with interpreters and is often shut. THE ANNIVERSARY REENACTMENT falls on the weekend nearest 28 June, is free or charges a modest parking fee, is very well attended and the parking fills — arrive early, and expect heat. Almost no shade anywhere on the field.
