Monocacy National Battlefield
National Battlefield · Frederick, Maryland
Farmland south of Frederick where, on 9 July 1864, about six thousand six hundred Union soldiers under Lew Wallace stood in the way of Jubal Early's army as it marched on a barely defended Washington. Wallace lost the battle badly and delayed Early by roughly a day, which was exactly long enough for Grant's veterans to reach the capital's forts ahead of him. The monument on the field puts it without embellishment: these men died to save the National Capital, and they did save it.
