Mons Klint

White Chalk Cliffs Rising Above 100 M On The East Coast Of The Island Of Mon, Inside The UNESCO Mon Biosphere Reserve, With The GeoCenter Mons Klint And Long Stairways To The Beach · Borre, Region Zealand

Mons Klint is a wall of white chalk that rises straight out of the Baltic on the east coast of the island of Mon, south of Zealand - roughly 6 km of cliff reaching over 100 m at its highest points, with beech forest on top and a pebble and flint beach below. The chalk is the compressed shells of tiny sea creatures laid down in the Cretaceous sea some 70 million years ago, later pushed up and folded by Ice Age glaciers, which is why the layers tilt and the cliff face keeps collapsing and renewing itself. People come for the view from the top, the long wooden stairways down to the beach, fossil hunting among the loose flints, and the GeoCenter Mons Klint, a family-friendly geology museum at the main car park. The whole island is a UNESCO biosphere reserve and Mon is known for dark night skies, so an overnight stay pays off. The honest caveat: the stairs are long and steep, rock falls close sections of beach without warning, the GeoCenter is seasonal, and on sunny summer weekends the main car park and the stairway by the museum are genuinely crowded.
