Mont-Saint-Michel
Tidal Island Crowned By A Benedictine Abbey Founded In 966, UNESCO World Heritage Site Inscribed 1979 Together With Its Bay · Le Mont-Saint-Michel, Normandy
Mont-Saint-Michel is a rocky tidal island off the coast of Normandy, close to the border with Brittany, stacked from its shoreline to its spire with a medieval village, ramparts and a Benedictine abbey that monks founded in 966. It is one of the most recognisable sights in Europe and one of the most visited places in France outside Paris. You leave the car in large car parks on the mainland and reach the island by a free shuttle or on foot across a modern bridge, which replaced the old causeway so the tides can move freely again. Inside the gate, the Grande Rue climbs steeply through a narrow lane of souvenir shops, crêperies and hotels, and on a summer afternoon it is shoulder to shoulder. The ticketed abbey at the top is the real reason to come: a Gothic cloister hanging over the bay, vast halls and a church on the summit rock. The bay has some of the largest tides in Europe; walking on the sands is only safe with a licensed guide. Stay the night, or arrive late, to see the Mont quiet.

The island itself is open at all hours and the village lane and ramparts can be walked freely day and night, but the abbey keeps set opening hours that change with the season: longer days in summer, shorter in winter, and last entry well before closing. The abbey closes on a few public holidays, usually including 1 January, 1 May and 25 December, so confirm before planning a trip around those dates. Some summer seasons have added evening openings at the abbey with lighting and music; whether they run in a given year needs confirming. The free shuttle from the mainland car parks runs from early morning until late in the evening, more often in high season, and the walk across the bridge takes roughly 35 to 45 minutes if you miss it. Car park charges are for the whole stay, not by the hour. Shops and restaurants on the Grande Rue mostly close in the early evening outside summer. At the highest spring tides the water can briefly surround the island and cover the end of the approach; the shuttle and footbridge keep working, but check the tide tables if you want to see it. Timed abbey tickets bought online help on busy days.
