Montagne d'Ambre National Park
Managed By Madagascar National Parks. Cool Montane Rainforest Island Above The Dry North With Crater Lakes, Waterfalls, Chameleons And Rare Lemurs; The Easiest National Park To Reach From Antsiranana · Joffreville, Diana
Montagne d'Ambre is a patch of cool, wet rainforest on an old volcanic massif that rises above the dry north, about 30 km south of Antsiranana. It is the easiest national park to reach from the northern capital, since a paved road climbs to Joffreville and the park gate. Inside are shaded trails to waterfalls such as the Cascade Sacree and the Antomboka falls, two crater lakes called Grand Lac and Petit Lac, and thick forest full of ferns, orchids and chameleons. Wildlife includes Sanford's brown lemur, crowned lemurs, tiny leaf chameleons and many birds. Weather is cooler, often misty and wet, even when the coast is baking, so plan for rain at any time. Local guides are compulsory and set the pace. Lemurs are likely but not guaranteed, and the paths between sights can be steep and muddy, and some visitors find the main waterfall short on drama. Bring a rain jacket whatever the forecast says in town. All prices here are unconfirmed.

Usually open daily from early morning to late afternoon, with last entry some hours before dark. Exact times are unconfirmed, so ask at the park office in Joffreville. Not closed for a season, but heavy rain from about December to March can make trails slippery, flooded or closed, and fog can hide views. Night walks run separately with a guide. The park is easily visited in one day from Antsiranana, with the paved road taking roughly an hour by car.
