Montaña de Oro State Park
State Park · Los Osos, California
Montana de Oro State Park is on the San Luis Obispo County coast, a short drive from Los Osos and Morro Bay, with Morro Rock visible in the north on clear days. The name is Spanish for Mountain of Gold, and it recalls the golden poppies and wildflowers that colour the hills in spring. It is a large, rugged park of sea cliffs, sea stacks, tide pools, sandy and pebbly coves and eucalyptus groves, with Spooner's Cove as the main beach. Bluff trails run along the cliffs, and a summit hike up Valencia Peak gives long coastal views - confirm trail names and lengths. The park also has a campground - confirm layout and booking. Fog and wind are common, the water is cold, and rip currents make swimming unwise. It suits walkers, families and surfers who accept wind and cool air. Allow a half day at least, because the cove, the bluffs and the summit are spread out, and arrive early on spring weekends when wildflower seekers fill the lots.

California State Parks has generally run Montana de Oro as a day-use park from early morning until late evening, with the campground following its own check-in rules - confirm current hours, whether the entrance has a kiosk and whether a day-use fee applies, since older sources describe free entry. The practical clock is the tide, the fog and the light: tide pools are best near low tide, morning fog often burns off by midday, and the bluffs are most colourful in late afternoon. Winter storms and big surf can close beach access or wash out trails, and wildfire or heavy rain can close trails with little notice. Staffing is light, so bring what you need and check before you go.
