Montara State Beach

State Park · Montara, California

Montara State Beach lies on the San Mateo County coast beside Highway 1, between Pacifica and Half Moon Bay. A long, wild beach of coarse sand sits below eroding golden bluffs, reached by stairs or dirt paths from small lots on the highway - confirm which lot has which access. The water is cold, the surf is heavy and rip currents are strong, so this is a beach for walking, surfing by experts, tide pools at the ends on low tides and sunsets, not for casual swimming. Fog and wind are common in summer, and clear, still winter days are often the best. The park also takes in the slopes of Montara Mountain inland, with a long, steep climb to a summit that looks over the Bay Area and the ocean. Facilities are minimal, crowds are modest outside sunny weekends, and the beach feels more rugged than the developed sand of Southern California. Plan two hours at the beach, or a full day with the mountain, and bring layers.

8150 CA-1, Montara, California, 94037, United States

The beach is open roughly 8 AM to sunset, and the small lots off Highway 1 are not staffed, so there is usually no booth and no gate - confirm current hours with California State Parks. Entry has long been free, but pay stations can appear at any State Parks lot, so confirm the current rule on arrival. Winter storms and high surf can close stairs, trails and the bluff edge, and cliff erosion changes access from year to year. Coastal fog often hides the view in summer mornings. Cell signal can drop in the cove and on the mountain. Check the State Parks page and the tide table on the day you go.
