Montauk

Beach Town · Montauk, New York

The hamlet at the eastern tip of Long Island, 120 miles from Manhattan and the last stop on the railway — a commercial fishing port that became a surf town that became, in the last fifteen years, an extension of the Hamptons that most of its residents resent. It has the largest commercial and recreational fishing fleet in New York State, a serious Atlantic surf break at Ditch Plains, and more public beach than anywhere else on the South Fork.

742 Montauk Highway, Montauk, New York, 11954, United States

An open hamlet — free, no gate, no hours. ⚠ BEACH PARKING requires a Town of East Hampton permit in season at most lots, though SOME MONTAUK LOTS SELL DAILY PASSES TO NON-RESIDENTS, which is unusual for the South Fork — check the Town of East Hampton parking page. Walking or cycling onto the beach is free. Shops and restaurants keep their own hours and MANY CLOSE FROM NOVEMBER TO APRIL. Camp Hero, Hither Hills and Shadmoor are state parks with their own vehicle fees. ⚠ NOT VERIFIED FOR THIS FILE.
