Montauk Point Lighthouse

Lighthouse · Montauk, New York

The oldest lighthouse in New York State, authorised by the Second Congress and commissioned by GEORGE WASHINGTON, first lit in 1796 at the eastern tip of Long Island. It was built 297 feet back from the bluff edge; erosion has since taken all but a fraction of that, and the enormous stone revetment below it is the only reason the tower is still standing. It is a National Historic Landmark and it still operates as an active aid to navigation.
