Monterey State Historic Park

State Park · Monterey, California

Monterey State Historic Park is not one site but a scatter of historic adobes and gardens spread through downtown Monterey, near Fisherman's Wharf and Old Monterey. Monterey was the capital of Alta California under Spain and Mexico, and the park protects buildings from that era, among them the Custom House, often described as the oldest government building in California, plus Colton Hall, the Pacific House and houses such as the Larkin House and Casa Soberanes - confirm which are open. A walking route known as the Path of History links them, marked by yellow tiles in the sidewalk (confirm the route). Guided tours run some days (confirm days and prices), and many buildings open only on a limited schedule. Fog is common, and tourist crowds fill downtown in summer. Cannery Row and the aquarium are separate. It rewards patient walkers who read the plaques and take a tour, and it frustrates people who expect one gated site with a single ticket.

California State Parks has generally kept the outdoor gardens and sidewalks of the Path of History open freely during daylight, while the buildings keep limited hours, often a few days a week and shorter in winter - confirm which are open and when. Some adobes open only for guided tours or special events, and a few may be closed for repair or staffing. The Custom House and Colton Hall have their own schedules. Start at a visitor point or the Custom House to learn what is open that day, and call ahead if one building matters. Fog and weekend crowds can change the feel of a visit, and winter weekdays may offer little more than the exteriors and gardens.
