Monticello American Viticultural Area
Wine Region · Charlottesville, Virginia
The appellation around Charlottesville, established in 1984 and now Virginia's flagship wine region — roughly forty wineries in the foothills of the Blue Ridge, most of them within forty minutes of each other. Jefferson spent thirty years trying and failing to grow European vines on this ground; two centuries later the same slopes produce the Viognier and Cabernet Franc that put Virginia on wine lists outside the state.
