Montmorency Falls
Parc De La Chute Montmorency (SÉPAQ) · Québec City, Quebec
Montmorency Falls drops about 83 m into the St. Lawrence River at the edge of Quebec City, roughly 15 minutes by car from the walled Old Town. That is about 30 m taller than Niagara Falls, although the Montmorency River is far narrower, so this is a tall, thin ribbon of water rather than a wide curtain. Parc de la Chute-Montmorency, run by Sepaq, gives several ways to see it: a cable car between the base and the clifftop, a suspension bridge across the very top of the drop, a long staircase down the cliff beside the water, and a manor house at the upper edge. Spring melt gives the heaviest flow and the wettest bridge. In winter the spray freezes into a large ice cone at the base that locals call the sugar loaf, which is a winter feature only. It suits families, photographers and cruise or short-stay visitors who want one big natural sight close to the city. It is short and can be crowded: allow two to three hours, and confirm which services run on the day.

The park grounds are open year round, but the cable car, the zip line, the staircase and the visitor services follow seasonal schedules set by Sepaq, with the fullest service from late spring to early autumn. In deep winter some paths and the staircase may be closed for ice, and the cable car may run on reduced days. Opening times, last entry and any closures for wind or ice change from year to year, so confirm on the Sepaq information before you drive out. Parking is charged at the lots, and the fee and payment method should be confirmed. Morning is usually quieter and gives better light on the falls, while summer weekends and cruise-ship days bring crowds to the bridge and the cable car.
