Montserrat
Benedictine Abbey Founded In 1025 On The Montserrat Massif, Holding The Black Madonna, Patron Of Catalonia, And The Escolania, One Of The Oldest Boys' Choirs In Europe · Monistrol de Montserrat, Catalonia
A mountain that looks like nothing else in Europe and a monastery wedged into it. Montserrat means serrated mountain, and the name is literal: the massif is a mass of conglomerate rock eroded into hundreds of rounded pillars and fingers, rising abruptly out of flat farmland an hour from Barcelona. A Benedictine community has been here since the eleventh century and still is, which makes this a working monastery rather than a museum, and it holds the Black Madonna, a Romanesque carving that is the patron of Catalonia and the object most pilgrims come to touch. The other draw is the Escolania, one of the oldest boys' choirs in Europe, which sings a short service on a fixed weekday schedule and is the single thing worth timing a visit around. Beyond the basilica the mountain itself is the point: marked paths run out to hermitages and viewpoints, and most day visitors never walk any of them.

NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED. The structure: the BASILICA is free and open daily with closures around the monastic hours and Mass. THE ESCOLANIA sings at a FIXED WEEKDAY TIME plus Sundays and does NOT sing during the choir school's holidays, which is the single detail to confirm. The RACK RAILWAY, CABLE CAR and SANT JOAN FUNICULAR each run their own timetables, close in high wind, and the last descent is earlier than people expect. The museum keeps shorter hours.
