Montshire Museum of Science

Science Museum · Norwich, Vermont

A hands-on science museum on a hundred and ten acres above the Connecticut River at Norwich, with more than a hundred and fifty exhibits inside and a science park of wind, water and sound exhibits outside, plus nature trails through the woods down to the river. The name is a contraction of Vermont and New Hampshire, which is the honest description of who it serves - the Upper Valley either side of the river, with Dartmouth a few minutes away in Hanover. It is regularly called the best science museum in northern New England and it is the answer to a rainy day for a very large radius.

1 Montshire Road, Norwich, Vermont, 05055, United States

Open SEVEN DAYS A WEEK, YEAR ROUND, generally 10am to 5pm, with a per-person admission and free parking on site. ⚠ THE OUTDOOR DAVID GOUDY SCIENCE PARK - wind, water and sound exhibits, and half the reason to come - IS SEASONAL AND WEATHER-DEPENDENT, so a warm-weather visit is a substantially better museum than a winter one. The 110-acre site also carries nature trails toward the Connecticut River, included with admission. ⚠ WET SUMMER DAYS AND SCHOOL HOLIDAYS ARE GENUINELY BUSY - this is the rainy-day answer for the whole Upper Valley - so go early. ⚠ BRING A CHANGE OF CLOTHES FOR CHILDREN; they get wet at the water exhibits every time. MEMBERSHIP pays for itself in about two visits for anyone within an hour and carries reciprocal admission to other science museums. Staff-led demonstrations and drop-in programmes run through the day; check the schedule on arrival. Groups and school parties are arranged in advance.
