Monument Hill and Kreische Brewery State Historic Site

Historic Site · La Grange, Texas

A bluff two hundred feet above the Colorado at La Grange holding two unrelated things — a tomb containing the remains of Texans killed in the Dawson Massacre and the Black Bean Death Lottery of 1843, and the ruins of one of the first commercial breweries in Texas, built by a German stonemason who bought the hill because he liked the view.
