Monument Rocks and Castle Rock

National Natural Landmark · Oakley, Kansas

Chalk pyramids standing up to seventy feet out of empty shortgrass prairie in Gove County, cut by erosion from the Niobrara Chalk — the floor of the shallow sea that covered the middle of North America around eighty million years ago, and one of the richest marine fossil beds on earth. In 1968 they were among the first National Natural Landmarks designated. Castle Rock, a similar formation twenty miles east, is rougher to reach and emptier still. Both are on private land whose owners allow the public in.
