Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park
Navajo Tribal Park (Navajo Nation Parks & Recreation) · Monument Valley, Arizona
Sandstone buttes and mesas rising up to about a thousand feet from the desert on the Navajo Nation, straddling the Arizona-Utah line — the landscape of John Ford's westerns and the most recognisable image of the American West. The Navajo Nation runs it as a tribal park: a visitor centre and the Navajo-owned View Hotel look straight out at the West and East Mitten Buttes and Merrick Butte, and a 17-mile dirt Valley Drive loops among the formations. Much of the valley can only be entered with a Navajo guide. It is Navajo land with its own fees, rules and time zone, and national park passes are not accepted.
