Moores Creek National Battlefield
Battlefield · Currie, North Carolina
Where about a thousand Patriot militia met roughly eight hundred Loyalists at a bridge over Moores Creek on 27 February 1776 and beat them in a few minutes. The Patriots had removed the planks from the bridge and greased the girders. The defeat ended the royal governor's hope of retaking North Carolina for the Crown, stopped a planned British landing, and came weeks before North Carolina became the first colony to instruct its delegates to vote for independence.
