Moose Factory is an island community of about 2,500 people in the Moose River, a short boat ride from Moosonee, and it is one of the oldest settlements in Ontario. The Hudson Bay Company founded a fur-trade post here in 1673, and the island has served as a trading, mission and hospital centre ever since. Cree families of the Moose Cree First Nation have lived on these shores far longer, and today the community runs its own services and tells its own story. Visitors find a small museum park with old buildings, a restored staff house from the trading era, a historic Anglican church, shore trails and a cemetery that holds the names of traders and families. A hospital serves the whole coast. Boats arrive from Moosonee and, in winter, an ice road and helicopter take over. Services are simple, with a lodge, a few small food stops and craft sellers. The island suits a slow day or an overnight, with attention to community rules, river tides and the weather.

Moose Factory keeps limited visiting hours. The museum park, staff house and craft shops are usually open roughly June to early September, often about 10 to 5, with shorter days or by-appointment visits outside summer - confirm by phone with the community office. The church is open when staff or volunteers are present, and the grounds and shore paths can be walked in daylight. Boat taxis from Moosonee run on weather and tide, and winter crossings follow ice conditions and helicopter timetables, which may change within days. Plan to arrive before mid-afternoon so a late boat does not strand you.
