A Railway And River Town At The End Of The Line Near James Bay, With The Polar Bear Express Train, A Cree And Settler Heritage, River Boat Trips To Moose Factory Island And The Coast And A Gateway To The James Bay Lowlands. Reached Only By Train, Air Or Boat · Moosonee, Ontario

Moosonee is a town of about 1,500 people on the Moose River, a short run upstream from the shore of James Bay, and it is where the railway ends. No highway reaches it. The Ontario Northland line from Cochrane, roughly 300 km to the south, crosses spruce bog, muskeg and wide rivers and stops at the river bank, where freighter canoes wait at the docks. Cree families have lived, hunted and fished on this coast for thousands of years, and the modern town grew after 1903 around a trading post, a church, a school and the railway. The Polar Bear Express takes about four to five hours and is the main reason most visitors come. From the station, boat taxis cross to Moose Factory Island in minutes, and summer tours reach the tidal flats and the coast. Services are simple, with a few lodges, a store, a cafe and craft sellers, and prices for food and fuel are high because everything arrives by rail, barge or air. June to September gives long light and open services; plan for slow, weather-driven days.

Moosonee keeps no visiting hours, because it is a working town at the end of the line. Stores, the cafe, lodge desks and craft sellers are usually open about 9 to 5, with shorter days on weekends, and the river docks run boats whenever the water and weather allow - confirm by phone. The Polar Bear Express follows a summer timetable that roughly runs late June to early September, and a reduced train serves the rest of the year - confirm days and times with Ontario Northland before booking. Coast and wildlife tours run mainly June to September. In freeze-up and break-up, boats and winter crossings may stop for days, so keep a spare day.
