Mormon Handcart Historic Site at Martin's Cove

Historic Site Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints On The Mormon, Oregon And California Trails · Alcova, Wyoming

A visitors' centre and trail on the Sweetwater River, run by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, remembering the Martin and Willie handcart companies of 1856 — emigrants pulling their belongings in wooden handcarts who were caught by early blizzards in central Wyoming, where many died before rescuers from Salt Lake City reached them. Martin's Cove is the sheltered hollow where the Martin company took refuge. Visitors can borrow a handcart free and pull it along the trail, and every summer thousands of young people come on organised treks. Everyone is welcome, admission is free, and Devil's Gate is on the same site.

47600 West Highway 220, Alcova, Wyoming, 82620, United States

Visitors' centre open daily with seasonal hours; trails during daylight. Check the Church's historic sites website for current hours.
