Mormon Trail Center at Historic Winter Quarters
Visitor Centre Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints At The 1846 48 Mormon Pioneer Encampment, With The Mormon Pioneer Cemetery And The Winter Quarters Temple · Omaha, Nebraska
The Mormon Trail Center at Historic Winter Quarters is a free visitor centre run by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Florence neighbourhood of north Omaha, on the site of the camp where thousands of Latter-day Saints spent the winters of 1846 to 1848 after being driven out of Nauvoo, Illinois. Hunger, cold and disease killed several hundred people here, many of them small children, and the Mormon Pioneer Cemetery across the street holds their memory, with a well-known bronze of grieving parents by the sculptor Avard Fairbanks. From this camp Brigham Young led the first company west in the spring of 1847 to the Salt Lake Valley. Inside the centre, missionaries guide visitors through exhibits on the exodus, a covered wagon, a handcart you can pull and replica cabins. Beside the cemetery stands the Winter Quarters Nebraska Temple, whose grounds are open to all but whose interior is for church members with a recommend. It is a one to two hour stop, most meaningful to families tracing pioneer ancestors and to anyone following the Mormon Trail.

NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED. The typical pattern: the Mormon Trail Center opens daily from around 9 am into the evening, often until 9 pm, with a later opening on Sunday, around noon or 1 pm, and closes on a few holidays such as Christmas; the cemetery is open during daylight; the temple grounds are open daily, but the temple interior is for members by appointment and is usually closed Sundays and Mondays. The Bank of Florence and the Florence Mill keep limited, mostly warm-season hours. The traps that ruin a visit are expecting a temple tour, arriving Sunday morning before the centre opens, and planning a day around Florence museums that are shut. Confirm current times before relying on them.
