Mornington Peninsula
Melbourne'S Weekend Peninsula, An Hour And A Half South Of The City, Pairing Ocean And Bay Beaches Either Side Of The Same Strip Of Land With Victoria'S Best Known Hot Springs And A Cluster Of Cool Climate Wineries Inland · Sorrento, Victoria
The Mornington Peninsula curls south-east of Melbourne between the calm water of Port Phillip Bay and the open ocean of Bass Strait, and that split defines a visit here more than anything else. Bay-side towns - Mornington, Mount Martha, Dromana, Sorrento, Portsea - have sheltered, family-friendly beaches a short walk from cafes and holiday houses. The back, ocean-facing beaches, Gunnamatta chief among them, face Bass Strait directly and carry real surf and rip currents even on a calm-looking day. Peninsula Hot Springs, inland near Fingal, is Victoria's best-known geothermal bathing complex, a hillside of connected pools drawing day-trippers from Melbourne year-round. Arthurs Seat, the peninsula's high point, has a gondola running to a bay lookout. A cluster of cool-climate wineries sits inland around Red Hill, a smaller detour than the coast and the springs - the Yarra Valley remains the state's deeper wine destination. Point Nepean, at the tip, holds an old quarantine station and fort grounds. An hour to ninety minutes from Melbourne, this is the city's standard weekend escape.
An hour and a half south of Melbourne, between Port Phillip Bay and the open ocean coast, Sorrento, Victoria, Australia
Peninsula Hot Springs runs timed bathing sessions on a published daily timetable, with some precincts, including the private cave pools and adults-only spa areas, closing earlier than the main pools. Bay and ocean beaches have no gate and are open at all hours, though lifeguard patrols operate only through summer on the busier bay beaches and not at all on most back beaches. The Arthurs Seat gondola and the Sorrento to Queenscliff ferry both run daytime timetables that shorten in winter and can close in strong wind. Red Hill cellar doors generally open daily but some smaller producers close on quieter midweek days - confirm before driving out.
