Moron and the Laguna de la Leche

The Largest Natural Lake In Cuba, White With Lime Stirred Up From Its Bed, Beside The Town Everyone Passes Through On The Way To The Northern Keys · Moron, Ciego de Avila

Everyone driving to Cayo Coco passes through Moron and almost nobody stops, which is a pity for two reasons lying just outside it. The Laguna de la Leche is the largest natural lake in Cuba, around sixty-six square kilometres, and it is white - lime and gypsum deposits on the bed get stirred up and turn long stretches of it the colour of milk, which is what the name says. It connects to the sea through mangrove channels, holds flamingos and a great deal of other water birds, and Moron holds a carnival on it in the summer. A few kilometres away, the Laguna la Redonda is smaller and almost perfectly circular, fringed with mangrove and known across Cuba for its largemouth bass. In the town itself a bronze cockerel stands by the road and crows from a recording, when the recording is working. None of it is a destination on its own, but the whole of it is ten minutes off a road that every visitor to Cayo Coco already drives down, and almost nobody turns off.

The lagoons are open at all times; the restaurants, boat operators and fishing centres at both Laguna de la Leche and Laguna la Redonda keep daytime hours. Boats depend on fuel. THE MORON ROOSTER crows from a recording at set hours and has been silent for long periods. The town's carnival and the water carnival on the lagoon are held in the summer, on dates set locally.
