Morristown National Historical Park

National Historical Park · Morristown, New Jersey

THE FIRST NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARK EVER ESTABLISHED IN THE UNITED STATES, designated in 1933, and the ground where the Continental Army survived two winters — including the winter of 1779-80, which was the worst of the eighteenth century in the northeast and saw twenty-eight separate snowfalls at Jockey Hollow. Washington kept his headquarters in the Ford Mansion while his army built a thousand log huts in the hills and starved through it. More men were lost here to cold, hunger and disease than in most battles of the war, and the fact that the army was still an army in the spring is the reason the row exists.
