Moundville Archaeological Park
National Historic Landmark · Moundville, Alabama
Around 185 acres on a bluff above the Black Warrior River holding twenty-nine earthen platform mounds arranged around a central plaza — one of the largest Mississippian sites in North America and, at its height between roughly 1200 and 1450, one of the largest settlements north of Mexico. It was a planned town with a palisade, and the mounds are laid out in a deliberate order that archaeologists are still arguing about. The University of Alabama has run it since the 1930s and its museum holds the material excavated here.
