Mount Airy

Old Town · Mount Airy, North Carolina

A small Surry County town of about ten thousand in the northern foothills, and the birthplace of Andy Griffith - the believed inspiration for the fictional Mayberry, which the town has leaned into completely. Main Street has a working barber shop, a squad car fleet running tours, a diner and a museum, all trading on a television programme that ended in 1968. Beneath the nostalgia it is a genuinely intact small American main street, which is rarer than the Mayberry business.

200 North Main Street, Mount Airy, North Carolina, 27030, United States

The town is open at all times and FREE TO WALK. Individual attractions - the Andy Griffith Museum, Floyd's Barber Shop, the squad car tours - keep their own hours, generally daytime Monday to Saturday with reduced Sunday opening, and several close or shorten in winter. MAYBERRY DAYS in late September is the biggest event of the year and fills the town completely.
