Mount Angel Abbey
Monastery · Mount Angel, Oregon
A Benedictine monastery on top of a 485-foot butte above the Willamette Valley, founded in 1882 from Engelberg Abbey in Switzerland and home to a community of monks ever since. It is visited for one thing above all others: the abbey library, completed in 1970 to a design by Alvar Aalto - the only building by Aalto in the western United States, and one of only two in the country. The hilltop also gives a long view over the valley to the Cascades.

FREE and open to visitors daily, with the grounds, church and gift shop generally open through the day. ⚠ THE AALTO LIBRARY KEEPS ITS OWN, SEPARATE AND SHORTER HOURS as a working academic library, and it is frequently closed when the rest of the hilltop is open - check its schedule specifically before travelling, because it is the reason most visitors come. ⚠ THE MONKS SING THE DIVINE OFFICE SEVERAL TIMES A DAY on a published horarium and visitors may attend; arrive before an office begins rather than during it. The monastic enclosure is private.
