Mount Arrowsmith

The Highest Peak On The South Central Part Of Vancouver Island, A Landmark Visible From The Strait Of Georgia, With Ski Runs And Hiking Routes To The Summit Through Alpine Meadows, And Views Across To The Mainland. A Day Hike In Summer And A Ski Hill In Winter · Port Alberni, British Columbia

Mount Arrowsmith rises to about 1,819 m in the Vancouver Island Ranges, north of Port Alberni and west of Parksville on the road to the west coast, and from the Strait of Georgia on a clear day it looks like the great peak of the island (confirm height). Snow covers its upper slopes much of the year, its flanks fall to old forest and green lakes, and its slopes are cut by routes of different difficulty, from steep forest tracks to a summit scramble. Mount Arrowsmith Regional Park and the nearby ski area give the mountain a working place in the life of the Alberni Valley and the Parksville and Qualicum coast, and the wider area is part of a UNESCO biosphere region (confirm). The territory belongs to Coast Salish and Nuu-chah-nulth peoples, including Qualicum, Snaw-naw-as and Hupacasath (confirm). Parking, logging roads, gates and routes change from season to season, and snow can linger into July, so confirm conditions with a local source before going.

Mount Arrowsmith, a 1,819 m peak in the Vancouver Island Ranges about 30 km west of Parksville on the Port Alberni side, with a ski area and a biosphere region; coordinates approximate, Port Alberni, British Columbia, Canada

The mountain has no gate, so hikes depend on snow, daylight and logging road access, with the main season for the summit routes from about July to September and snow lingering into early summer (confirm). The small ski area on the Port Alberni side runs a short winter season in good snow years, generally on weekends and holidays, so confirm days and lift status before driving up. Forest roads to some trailheads may close for logging or washouts. Start summit routes early, because daylight and weather decide how long you can safely stay.
