Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park
British Columbia Provincial Park And Part Of The Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks UNESCO World Heritage Site; Mount Assiniboine Reaches 3,618 Metres And Is Called The Matterhorn Of The Rockies. There Is No Road In · Radium Hot Springs, British Columbia
Mount Assiniboine is a near-perfect rock pyramid standing three thousand six hundred and eighteen metres on the Continental Divide, and it is called THE MATTERHORN OF THE ROCKIES for the obvious reason. Below it lies Lake Magog, and the view across the water to the peak is one of the two or three most reproduced mountain images in Canada. THE PARK HAS NO ROAD. You walk in - roughly twenty-seven kilometres over a pass from the Mount Shark trailhead, or a similar distance from Sunshine Village - or you take a helicopter, which flies on scheduled days in summer and is how most visitors arrive. At the lake there is a lodge from 1928, a set of rustic huts and a campground, and nothing else at all. It has been a provincial park since 1922 and forms part of the CANADIAN ROCKY MOUNTAIN PARKS UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE. Almost nobody sees it by accident, which is precisely the point.

A SHORT SUMMER SEASON AND NO ROAD ACCESS AT ALL. The practical window is ROUGHLY LATE JUNE OR EARLY JULY TO EARLY OCTOBER, when the passes are clear of snow and the helicopter is flying. THE HELICOPTER OPERATES ON SCHEDULED DAYS ONLY - typically a small number of days each week - and MUST BE BOOKED WELL IN ADVANCE; it is weather-dependent and cancels. ASSINIBOINE LODGE AND THE NAISET HUTS BOOK MONTHS TO A YEAR AHEAD and the lodge in particular is often full a year out. THE MAGOG CAMPGROUND IS RESERVED AND CHARGED through BC Parks. WALKING IN IS ROUGHLY 27KM EACH WAY over a pass, which is a full hard day in each direction. WINTER ACCESS IS SKI TOURING ONLY, for experienced parties, with the lodge running a limited winter season.
