Mount Auburn Cemetery

National Historic Landmark · Cambridge, Massachusetts

A hundred and seventy-five acres of landscaped hills and ponds on the Cambridge and Watertown line, consecrated in 1831 as the first garden cemetery in America — and, because it was the first large designed landscape in the country open to the public, the effective beginning of the American public parks movement that led to Central Park and the Emerald Necklace. It is a working cemetery, an arboretum, a National Historic Landmark and one of the best spring migration birding sites in the Northeast, all at once.
