Mount Carleton Provincial Park

New Brunswick Provincial Park Containing Mount Carleton At 817 Metres, The Highest Point In The Maritime Provinces, And A Dark Sky Preserve Designated In 2017 · Saint-Quentin, New Brunswick

Mount Carleton is eight hundred and seventeen metres high, which sounds modest until you realise it is THE HIGHEST POINT IN ALL THREE MARITIME PROVINCES - there is nothing taller in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia or Prince Edward Island. The park around it covers about seventeen thousand hectares of the northern New Brunswick highlands, a long way from anywhere, with a handful of lakes, a ring of rounded Appalachian summits and very few people. The summit is bare rock with a fire tower and a view that reaches into Quebec on a clear day. In 2017 the park was designated a DARK SKY PRESERVE, and it is one of the best places to look at the sky in eastern Canada: no town of any size within an hour, and the campgrounds sit under it. Moose are genuinely common here in a way they are not further south. It is the one place in the Maritimes that feels properly like wilderness rather than countryside.

Route 385, northern New Brunswick, Restigouche County, Saint-Quentin, New Brunswick, Canada

SEASONAL. THE PARK'S SERVICED SEASON RUNS ROUGHLY LATE MAY TO EARLY OCTOBER, when the gate is staffed, the campgrounds are open, the washrooms are maintained and the trails are cleared; A DAILY VEHICLE OR PERSON ENTRY FEE APPLIES in that period and camping is charged separately and reservable through the New Brunswick parks system. OUTSIDE THE SEASON THE ROAD IN IS GENERALLY NOT MAINTAINED and the park is effectively closed to ordinary access, though winter use has been permitted in some years by arrangement. THE ACCESS ROAD IS LONG AND PARTLY GRAVEL - allow far more time than the distance suggests, and there are NO SERVICES INSIDE THE PARK AT ALL: no shop, no fuel, no restaurant. The nearest supplies are in Saint-Quentin or Riley Brook. Confirm current dates and fees before travelling.
