Mount Diablo State Park
State Park · Clayton, California
Mount Diablo State Park rises above the East Bay near Danville and Walnut Creek, with a summit of about 3,850 ft that stands alone above the surrounding valleys. On a clear day the view from the top covers a very large area, from the Golden Gate and the Farallon Islands to the Central Valley and, in the best conditions, the Sierra Nevada; it is often claimed to be among the largest viewsheds in the world. A paved road climbs from a north gate and a south gate, steep and winding and shared with many cyclists. At the top are a visitor centre and observation deck (confirm hours), and lower down are Rock City, a cluster of sandstone outcrops with wind caves, and Mitchell Canyon, a long approach from the north. Spring brings wildflowers, summers are hot and dry, and fire closures happen. Go on a clear weekday morning, bring water, watch for ticks, ground squirrels and rattlesnakes, and confirm the fee, gate hours and any closure before you drive up.

The park is generally open daily from about 8 AM until sunset, with the entrance gates locked at the posted closing time, so confirm the exact hours on the State Parks site because they shift with the season. The summit visitor centre, museum and observation deck keep shorter hours than the gates and may open only on certain days, and the deck is weather dependent - confirm before you drive up. Campgrounds have their own check-in times and reservation rules. In dry, windy weather the park can close roads and trails for fire risk, and after a wildfire in the area it may stay shut for days. Heavy rain and rare snow near the top can also close the summit road, so check the alerts the morning you go.
