Mount Equinox Skyline Drive

Scenic Highway · Arlington, Vermont

Five point two miles of private paved road climbing to a summit of three thousand eight hundred and forty-eight feet above Manchester - the longest privately owned paved toll road in the United States, and the mountain, the road and everything on it belong to an order of Carthusian monks. A chemist called Joseph George Davidson built the road, built a hydroelectric plant that still helps power the monastery, invited the Carthusians to Vermont and eventually gave them nearly seven thousand acres. At the top is a viewing centre they built as a gift to the public, with five states visible on a clear day. Down in the valley, closed and silent, is the only Carthusian monastery in North America.

⚠ SEASONAL - open roughly MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND TO 31 OCTOBER, daily 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and ⚠ THE LAST VEHICLE IS ADMITTED AT 4:00 PM, which regularly catches late arrivals. The gate is shut outside the season and there is no way up by car. ⚠ THE OPERATOR PUBLISHES FIXED TOLLS: $25 per vehicle including the driver, $5 per additional passenger and children under 10 free from Memorial Day through 30 September, RISING TO $30 PER VEHICLE for 1-31 October - a foliage surcharge worth knowing before you arrive. CHECK AT THE GATE, because rates change. The toll covers the 5.2-mile drive and the SAINT BRUNO SCENIC VIEWING CENTER at the 3,848-foot summit, which has restrooms. ⚠ LOOK AT THE MOUNTAIN BEFORE PAYING - the summit can sit in cloud while the valley is sunny, and the toll is substantial and non-refundable. ⚠ USE LOW GEAR ON THE 5.2-MILE DESCENT rather than riding the brakes. Large vehicles, trailers and motorhomes may be restricted. ⚠ THE CHARTERHOUSE OF THE TRANSFIGURATION IN THE VALLEY IS A CLOISTERED MONASTERY AND IS CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC.
