Mount Greylock State Reservation

National Natural Landmark · Lanesborough, Massachusetts

The highest point in Massachusetts at three thousand four hundred and ninety-one feet, and the state's first public land — set aside in 1898, decades before most states had a park system. A paved road climbs to the summit from May to autumn, where a ninety-three-foot granite war memorial tower stands beside a 1930s stone lodge that still serves meals and rents beds. The Appalachian Trail crosses the top. On a clear day you can see into five states.

The reservation is open year round; THE PAVED SUMMIT ROAD IS SEASONAL, generally late May to late October, closed in winter and in bad weather, and gated and locked at a posted time each evening. A modest parking fee applies at the summit in season; hiking is free. Bascom Lodge serves meals and rents rooms seasonally and should be booked ahead.
