Mount Hood
Volcano · Government Camp, Oregon
A glaciated stratovolcano of 11,249 feet, the highest point in Oregon and the most climbed snow peak in North America after Japan's Mount Fuji. It stands alone about fifty miles east of Portland, visible from most of the city on a clear day, and carries twelve glaciers and the only year-round lift-served skiing in the United States. The United States Geological Survey rates it a very high threat volcano; it last erupted in the 1790s, shortly before Lewis and Clark passed its foot.
Timberline Highway, Government Camp, Oregon, 97028, United States
FREE and open 24 hours a day, year round - the mountain has no gate. Timberline Lodge is open year round and is free to walk into. The three ski areas keep their own seasons, and Timberline runs the only year-round lift-served skiing in the United States on the Palmer Snowfield. ⚠ TYRE CHAINS ARE A LEGAL REQUIREMENT ON THE MOUNTAIN HIGHWAYS IN WINTER AND ARE ENFORCED, and an Oregon Sno-Park permit is required at winter parking areas from November to April. Most Forest Service trailheads need a Northwest Forest Pass. Weather closes roads and the upper mountain without much notice; check the mountain forecast rather than Portland's.
