Mount Hood National Forest

National Forest · Sandy, Oregon

Over a million acres running south from the Columbia River Gorge across sixty miles of forested mountains, lakes and streams to Olallie under the slopes of Mount Jefferson. It is the national forest Portland actually uses - close enough that a million and a half people can reach it in an hour, which makes it one of the most heavily visited forests in the country. It holds Mount Hood itself, four wilderness areas, Timberline Lodge, and the huckleberry fields that Warm Springs, Yakama and Umatilla people have harvested here for generations.

16400 Champion Way, Sandy, Oregon, 97055, United States

FREE and open 24 hours a day, year round, across more than a million acres. Individual campgrounds and day-use sites are seasonal and many are reservable. ⚠ A NORTHWEST FOREST PASS OR INTERAGENCY PASS IS REQUIRED AT MOST DEVELOPED TRAILHEADS, and an Oregon Sno-Park permit is required at winter parking areas from November to April - both are enforced. Tyre chains are a legal requirement on the mountain highways in winter. Forest roads close for snow from autumn to early summer, and wildfire closures occur in late summer at short notice.
