Mount Kailash (Kang Rinpoche)

Sacred Mountain In Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism And Bon; Climbing Prohibited · Darchen, Tibet

The most sacred mountain in Asia: a lone, snow-streaked pyramid of 6,638 m in far western Tibet, holy to Hindus as the abode of Shiva, to Buddhists as the home of Demchok, to Jains and to followers of Bon. It has never been climbed, and climbing is forbidden. Pilgrims instead walk the kora, a 52-km circuit crossing the 5,630-metre Drolma La pass, usually over three days. Sacred Lake Manasarovar lies below. Visits require agency tours and multiple permits, and demand is especially high in 2026, a Horse year. The kora begins and ends in the village of Darchen, where this row is pinned, and the season runs roughly May to mid-October.

Darchen, Burang County, Ngari Prefecture, Darchen, Tibet, China
