Mount Lemmon Scenic Byway
Sky Island Scenic Byway, Coronado National Forest · Tucson, Arizona
The Catalina Highway climbs from the saguaro desert on Tucson's north-east edge to pine and fir forest near the top of the Santa Catalina Mountains, about 27 miles and roughly 6,000 feet higher. Travellers often compare the change in plants and climate to driving from Mexico to Canada. Pullouts such as Babad Do'ag, Seven Cataracts and Windy Point look over hoodoos and the city far below. Near the top, the small village of Summerhaven, rebuilt after the 2003 Aspen Fire, has cabins and a cookie shop, and Mount Lemmon Ski Valley is one of the southernmost ski areas in the US. The University of Arizona's Mount Lemmon SkyCenter runs night-sky programmes. A Coronado National Forest pass is needed to stop at developed sites. Snow can close the road in winter, and cyclists share it year-round.
