Mount Maunganui
A Surf Beach Town At The Base Of Mauao, An Extinct Volcanic Cone That Can Be Walked, Run Or Climbed In About An Hour, With A Patrolled Main Beach, Hot Saltwater Pools At Its Base And A Cafe Strip That Fills With Holidaymakers From Across The North Island Every Summer · Mount Maunganui, Bay of Plenty
Mount Maunganui - Mauao in Maori - is a surf beach town built around the base of an extinct volcanic cone at the entrance to Tauranga Harbour, part of the wider Tauranga urban area on the Bay of Plenty coast. The cone itself rises 232 metres straight from the sand and can be walked, run or climbed in about an hour, rewarding the effort with a view over the harbour, the ocean beach and the Mount's surf breaks laid out below. A long, patrolled main beach runs along the ocean side, drawing surfers, swimmers and holidaymakers from across the North Island every summer, while hot saltwater pools at the Mount's base offer a soak after the climb or a swim. A cafe and restaurant strip along Maunganui Road fills through the warmer months and empties out considerably in winter, when the town reverts to a quieter local beach suburb. This is a beach-town destination first, with none of nearby Rotorua's geothermal or cultural-tourism focus - the draw here is sand, surf and the climb itself, not thermal pools or Maori cultural performance, both of which belong to inland Rotorua.

Mount Maunganui's beach and the Mauao summit track have no gate and are open at any hour, though climbing after dark without a headtorch is not recommended given the loose rock sections higher up. The beach is patrolled by lifeguards during summer, roughly late October through March, typically 10am to 6pm on patrolled days, and unpatrolled outside that window - swim with real caution off season. The hot saltwater pools at the base keep set daily hours, roughly 6am to 10pm, with shorter winter hours. Cafes along Maunganui Road generally run 7am to late, though some close earlier or entirely in the quieter winter months - do not assume a summer cafe strip is fully open in July.
