Mount Meru is a volcano of 4,566 m north of Arusha and the second-highest mountain in Tanzania. It rises inside Arusha National Park, a small park about 32 km from the city. The climb is usually done in 3-4 days by the Momella route, with a park ranger who carries a rifle because of buffalo and elephants. It is shorter and cheaper than Kilimanjaro and many people use it to acclimatise first. The last section is steep and exposed along a narrow crater rim, with Kilimanjaro rising above the clouds at dawn. The park is also a good day trip: Ngurdoto Crater, the Momella Lakes with flamingos and hippos, giraffes, buffalo and black-and-white colobus monkeys. There are no lions here. The honest picture: it is a fine alternative for travellers with only a day or two, and the climb is hard but rewarding. Success rates are high, roughly 80-90 percent, for those who go slowly and acclimatise. A day visit to the park costs roughly USD 50-60 in fees, and the climb with an operator roughly USD 700-1,200 for four days; confirm.
