Mount Moosilauke

Bare Alpine Summit Of About 4,802 Feet, The Westernmost 4,000 Footer Of The White Mountains; Dartmouth College Owns Much Of Its Eastern Side And Runs The Moosilauke Ravine Lodge, And The Appalachian Trail Crosses The Summit. · Warren, New Hampshire

A broad, bald-topped mountain of about 4,802 feet at the southwestern edge of the White Mountains, usually named as the westernmost of New Hampshire's 48 peaks over 4,000 feet. Its summit is a wide dome of rock, sedge and low alpine plants above treeline, and on a clear day the view runs east to the Franconia Range and Mount Washington, west across Vermont to the Green Mountains and, on the best days, to the Adirondacks. Dartmouth College owns much of the eastern side and runs the Moosilauke Ravine Lodge, a large log lodge at the end of a gravel road off Route 118 in Warren, where the popular Gorge Brook Trail begins. The Appalachian Trail crosses the summit, climbing from Glencliff on the south and dropping north down the steep Beaver Brook Trail beside a chain of cascades into Kinsman Notch. In the nineteenth century a carriage road climbed to a stone summit hotel that later burned, and its foundations still lie among the rocks. The open top is fully exposed to wind and fog, and the weather can turn quickly in any season.
