Mount Philo State Park

Mountain Peak · Charlotte, Vermont

Two hundred and thirty-seven acres on a nine-hundred-and-sixty-eight-foot hill in Charlotte, and the first state park Vermont ever had - given to the state in 1924 by a Massachusetts man who owned the inn next door. A Civilian Conservation Corps unit arrived in the early 1930s and built the access road, the campground, the ranger's quarters, the picnic area and the summit lodge, most of which is still in use. The hill is small by the standards of this folder and the view from the top is not: the whole Champlain Valley laid out below with the lake behind it and the Adirondacks on the far side, which is one of the great views in New England for almost no effort.

5425 Mount Philo Road, Charlotte, Vermont, 05445, United States

⚠ A VERMONT STATE PARK WITH A SEASONAL OPERATING PERIOD - check before travelling, particularly for the auto road, which is closed outside it and turns the summit into a walk. A modest per-person day-use fee covers entry AND the auto road; ⚠ THERE IS NO SEPARATE TOLL, unlike Mount Equinox or Mount Ascutney. The CCC-built road climbs to a summit car park a short, largely level walk from the overlook. ⚠ THE SUMMIT CAR PARK IS SMALL AND CLOSES WHEN FULL, which on a fine autumn evening or a summer weekend happens early - arrive with margin, or walk up the foot trail, which is thirty to forty minutes and about 600 feet. ⚠ COME FOR SUNSET: it faces west over Lake Champlain to the Adirondacks and that is the point of the place. ⚠ THE OVERLOOK IS AN OPEN CLIFF EDGE WITH A REAL DROP and no continuous substantial barrier - mind children. A small campground operates at the top, and the CCC picnic area is one of the better ones in Vermont.
