Mount Revelstoke National Park
National Park Of About 260 Square Kilometres In The Columbia Mountains; The Meadows In The Sky Parkway Climbs 26 Kilometres To Subalpine Meadows Near The Summit, And The Park Protects Inland Temperate Rainforest Found Almost Nowhere Else On Earth · Revelstoke, British Columbia
Mount Revelstoke is one of the smaller national parks at about two hundred and sixty square kilometres, and it earns its place through two things that exist almost nowhere else. The first is the MEADOWS IN THE SKY PARKWAY, a twenty-six kilometre road of switchbacks that climbs from the Trans-Canada to within a short walk of the summit - ONE OF VERY FEW PLACES IN CANADA WHERE YOU CAN DRIVE INTO TRUE SUBALPINE MEADOW, which in late July and August is solid with wildflowers. The second is INLAND TEMPERATE RAINFOREST: the Columbia Mountains trap enough Pacific moisture to grow western red cedars over five hundred years old and hemlock forest of a kind found nowhere else this far from the sea, and the Giant Cedars boardwalk runs straight through it at highway level. The park was created in 1914 after local people lobbied for it, which makes it one of Canada's earliest citizen-driven parks.

THE PARK IS OPEN YEAR-ROUND BUT THE PARKWAY IS NOT. THE MEADOWS IN THE SKY PARKWAY OPENS IN STAGES AS THE SNOW CLEARS - typically partly from late June and to the top from mid-July into early October - AND IT CLOSES FOR THE WINTER ENTIRELY. CHECK THE CURRENT OPENING BEFORE DRIVING UP; people arrive in June expecting meadows and find a gate. FROM THE UPPER CAR PARK A FREE SHUTTLE RUNS THE LAST STRETCH TO BALSAM LAKE in the peak season. A PARKS CANADA ENTRY FEE APPLIES, recently around CAD 10-12 per adult daily, with a Discovery Pass covering it and the same pass serving Glacier National Park next door. THE GIANT CEDARS AND SKUNK CABBAGE BOARDWALKS ARE AT HIGHWAY LEVEL and are open far longer than the parkway. There is no campground inside this park; Revelstoke town is minutes away.
